CANDLE IN THE WIND
by Elton John
Goodbye England's rose,
May you ever grow in our hearts.
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart.
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain.
Now you belong to heaven,
And the stars spell out your name.
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind.
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in.
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills.
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will.
Loveliness we’ve lost
These empty days, without your smile.
This torch we’ll always carry
For our nation’s golden child.
And even though we try,
The truth brings us to tears.
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years.
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind.
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in.
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills.
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will.
Sir Elton John devoted this song to Lady Diana Frances Spencer
Lady Diana Frances Spencer was born 1 July 1961 in Norfolk and died on 31 August 1997 in an automobile crash. She was just 20 when she married Prince Charles. Her beauty and youthful charisma quickly earned Diana the nickname of "the people's princess." She and Charles had two sons. Diana and Charles were divorced in 1996 and Diana devoted her life to her two sons and to worldwide charities. She and her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed, were killed in 1997 in a high-speed car crash while being followed by paparazzi in Paris, France. She cooperated with some charity organizations, especially the organizations which fought against AIDS and anti – personnel mine in Angola.
At Diana's funeral Sir Elton John sang "Goodbye England's Rose," a reworking of the tune "Candle in the Wind”
